Sparrow Hawk Mountain
Day Hike. Picnic. Epic Views.
Tucked away in the heart of Tahlequah, Oklahoma 'Sparrow Hawk Mountain' is a well-known landmark located in the Ozark Plateau region of the state. The mountain is a popular hiking destination for locals and weekend visitors.
The trail offers gorgeous scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Perfect for a day hike or mid-day exercise, trail to summit is approximately 2.5 miles round trip. It is considered a moderate hike in difficult due to steep hills and inclines.
Though a local and growing up in the area, I discovered the trail in my late 20's taking day hikes with friends and loved ones. Hiking the trail multiple times never disappoints. Its beautiful in fall, spring, and summer. Whether you are looking for a day hike with friends or family, this trail offers a great hike for all ages. Its also the perfect hike for a small picnic at the summit.
Sparrow Hawk Mountain is also a site of historical and cultural significance, as it is believed to have been a lookout point for the Cherokee Nation during the Trail of Tears. As you enter the summit, you understand exactly how this could have been. Reaching the lookout point requires walking down an extremely steep decline and should be handled with care. Though this view isn't for everybody, considering how steep the decline is, the payoff for the view is incredible. If you don't feel comfortable walking down to the lookout, the view from the summit is equally as breathtaking. You can watch many eagles circle the trees high up above the mountain for an amazing experience and end to your climb.
If you plan on visiting Sparrow Hawk Mountain, be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water, as mentioned the hike can be steep in places. Additionally, be respectful of the natural environment and follow any posted rules or regulations.
The mountain is located on private property, and hikers are asked to be respectful of the landowners and to follow Leave No Trace principles while visiting the area. So, if you do decide to bring snacks or a picnic please be respectful of the land and 'pack it in, pack it out' as all hikers do.
